The warm flood plaines of the Colombian Caribbean were inhabited by groups of gatherers, hunters and potters. To enable them to control the floods and make use of the area for dwellings, fishing and the growing of crops societies constructed an extraordinary network of hydraulic drainage canals. Textiles fulfilled a fundamental and symbolic role. At the height of their civilization they buried their leaders in tombs accompanied by impressive gold breasplates.

Tairona People |
The Tairona people were a Pre-Columbian (before the arrival of Columbus and later the Spanish) warrior culture led by shamans called Mamos. Shamans were thought to have power over people and their thoughts. The Tairona worshiped their ancestors and a ''Universal Mother.'' They also believed that the universe was thought into existence.
They settled further up the mountains, building stone cities, such as Ciudad Perdida.
