The selling of "mochila" bags, have raised awareness of the tribe, as well as the critical conditions they face.
More than 270,000 Wayuu live in La Guajira, organized in 23 clans, Over the past decade, thousands of children, and the elderly have passed away and aid groups blame the deaths on malnutrition and a lack of basic medical care. Drilling operations, from one of the worlds largest open pit coal mines, Cerrejón, and the high demand for water, over 4.2 million gallons per day, drains water away from their local rivers and ground water and pollutes what is left. The Wayuu are increasingly being pushed away from their ancestral territories by accelerated desertification and reduced access to water making any kind of meaningful farming impossible. |
